Walks in Herts & Essex Volume 4: Walk 18

Two of our members have recently walked one of the walks from the latest BS&DFA walks booklet. Their discription gives an update on current conditions:

All Saints church, Rickling

All Saints church, Rickling

The walk starts at All Saints church, Rickling and as stated in the book parking is limited but looking at the notice board services are few and far between. The track was easy to follow to Wicken Bunhunt, but the Coach and Horses pub here is now a Thai Restaurant. It is also worth taking a slight detour to look at the church. Again the bridleway from here was easy to follow going up to one of the highest points in Essex (106 metres) towards the M11 in the distance. There were no distant views of Saffron Walden as it was quite misty but the scenery was quite atmospheric. Descending back down, the track then takes a sharp right turn and from this point for some way has been used by motorbikes and 4X4s so was very muddy and rutted. The path goes under the M11 and continues to the ford and footbridge over Wicken Water, where there was more evidence of motorbikes being used on the muddy track. After going under the M11 again, the route passes the ancient thatched building of St Helen’s chapel. The rest of the walk is easy to follow with all paths well marked.

This route was walked on a mild day in February 2015 with plenty of evidence that spring is on its way.
