Walking and Cycling Route North: Bishop’s Stortford – UPDATE

We are pleased to provide an important update on the Bishop’s Stortford Walking and Cycling Route North project. A Planning Application for this major project has now been submitted by the Town Council and has been uploaded to the East Herts District Council Planning Portal.

The proposed new walking route will run from Michaels Road to Grange Paddocks providing connections to key locations including the town centre. The Town Council commissioned Sustrans (now named the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust) to prepare the Planning Application with support from the Town Council’s Sustainable Transport Sub-Committee of which the BSDFA is a co-opted member.

Key elements of the project include:

– New bridges across the River Stort and Bourne Brook

– Integration with existing paths, open spaces, the Leisure Centre and the town’s path network

– Safe, accessible design informed by community needs and disability access standards

– Reduction in over reliance on motor vehicles

– The creation of an all weather leisure amenity

– Links to new communities at Stortford Fields, St Michael’s Hurst and the Avanti schools

– A safe travel option to the narrow pavements of Rye Street allowing families to walk and cycle together

– New links to the extensive public rights of way network around the town

This proposal is planned to be the first of a network of sustainable travel routes for our town and we would be very grateful if you could add your support by adding a comment to the Planning Application. All you need to do is use the link I’ve attached below and then select the “Comments” tab and choose to comment in support. Write a few lines in your own words why you support the Application and then submit. You will need to give your name and address which is normal for planning comments. The deadline for comments is 19th November. Late comments can’t always be taken into account and so it’s worth doing it sooner rather than later.
