It’s been over two and half years since the damaged bridge over the Spel Brook in the Southern Country Park was closed by the County Council for safety reasons. In October 2024, we reported that workmen were on-site removing the old structure and we were hopeful that progress was finally being made. This was subject to the County Council obtaining the necessary approval from the Environment Agency for the design of the replacement structure.
Fifteen months on and we have been advised that the Environment Agency has rejected the original bridge specification and now require the replacement structure to be higher and longer. This will significantly extend the ramp length on both sides of the Spel Brook which will mean that the original design will need to be revisited. Consequently, the County Council’s original quotes for the work are no longer valid and new quotes will be required. This will clearly result in further delays.
