I’m sure that local walkers and cyclists will all agree that there is an urgent need to improve the walking and cycling infrastructure in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. We therefore welcome and support the petition from the Bishop’s Sortford Climate Group which calls on Hertfordshire County Council to commit now to completing the Towns’ priority cycling routes and ensuring that all spending on roads in the towns is used to improve safety and extend the network of routes suitable for cyclists and walkers. The street layouts in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth are poorly designed for cyclists, there are many narrow paths that discourage people from walking. Parents and children are afraid to support cycling to school. New housing areas have no joined up routes to get to shops or supermarkets. No wonder the number of cycle journeys in Stortford is lower than average!
For years the Bishop’s Stortford Climate Group and Sustainable Sawbridgeworth have been calling for investment in cycling and walking infrastructure improvements to reduce carbon emissions, improve health, and save people money. Despite the climate emergency, new highways schemes from Hertfordshire County Council are still car-biased. There is no resourced plan for delivering improvement for cycling and walking in East Herts and the latest funding from the Department for Transport will be spent elsewhere in the County.
